Being a Christian: What Does it Mean?
Many people think a Christian is someone who believes in God and tries to live a good life. But
that is a misconception.
A true Christian is not a "good person"
at all. Rather, he or she is a guilty sinner.
Have you ever lied or stolen? God sees you as a liar and a thief.
Have you ever looked with lust? Jesus said when we lust we commit adultery
in our hearts (Matthew
5:27-30). Have you ever used God's name as a swear
word? That is blasphemy (Exodus 20:7). Have you ever hated someone? Jesus
said God sees hate
as
the
same as murder (Matthew
5:21-22). We are all guilty sinners deserving
of God's wrath.
But there is good news!
God, in his love and
mercy,
sent
his son
Jesus to
live
a sinless
life
and
then
to
suffer and die
on the
cross, being punished in our place.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8). Then he rose from
the grave, defeating death! He offers forgiveness and
eternal life to all who who humbly repent (turn away from their
sins) and believe in Him. He will
cleanse you and give you a new heart! (Isaiah
1:18; 2
Corinthians 5:17)
